Grimsthorpe Ultra 70 Mile 12-Aug 2011

On a humid Friday morning at 9am around 60 competitors including myself started the ultra which consisted of running 7x 10 mile laps around Grimsthorpe castle private estate. The course I would describe as an undulating/flat run with a mixture of tarmac and trail path, the course was well marked out with black arrows on yellow background so no navigation skills where required. I ran the course on my own talking to passing runners but there was plenty to keep my mind occupied including what I was going to eat at the end of the 10 mile lap I was on. I wanted to finish the event in under 19 hours and set a target of running a lap every 2 hours, I was managing this time very well and was averaging running a lap every 1 hour 40 minutes with a 10-15 minute break. After around the 40 mile mark I still felt really fresh and continued at the same pace as I wanted to leave plenty of energy in the bank. Well I left plenty of energy in there alright and did the last 30 mile without any concerns what so ever finishing in a time of 14 hours 10 minutes in 5th position. At the finish I felt I had more still to give (around 20 miles) so I was very pleased although the thought is still in the back of my mind what if I had gone faster would I have won? To be honest finishing this event was my goal but the event give me encouragement to push on and enter more events at greater distance. This event was organised by Fat Feet who did a good job of looking after us all, we also had free therapist if needed and many people took advantage of this and had a rub down during the race. The event cost £55 which was a fair price and in line with other ultra events of this nature. I will possible think of doing the 105mile option next year but would really like to do a different event rather than the same ones. A t-shirt and medal where handed to us at the finish and I drove back to the Travel lodge for some well earned rest.
